- Dayton was an American businessman and philanthropist, who was most famous for being the founder of Dayton's department store which late become the company behind Target Corporation.
- After his death, the company became Target Corporation under the leadership of George Dayton's grandson Douglas Dayton.
- George Dayton started in banking by buying farm mortgages.
- Later he founded the Minnesota Loan and Investment Company, which advanced his social status and prosperity.
- In 1902 he purchased land on Nicollet Avenue in Minneapolis and founded Dayton's Dry Goods store, later to become Dayton's department store.
- He died in 1938 of cancer.
